Overview

Arizona's motor carrier enforcement is managed by ADOT's Enforcement and Compliance Division. As a major freight corridor state (I-10, I-40, I-17), Arizona sees heavy truck traffic and maintains an active inspection program. The state's proximity to the Mexican border adds international freight compliance considerations including customs bonding and border crossing requirements.

Inspection & Enforcement Program

Arizona operates 16 fixed ports of entry and weigh stations plus mobile inspection units. The state performs a high volume of Level I through Level III inspections, particularly along the I-10 corridor between Tucson and Phoenix and at the Ehrenberg and Sanders ports of entry on I-10 and I-40 respectively. Arizona participates in all national enforcement campaigns.

Weight Limits & Oversize/Overweight

Arizona follows federal weight limits of 80,000 lbs gross vehicle weight on Interstate highways. The state allows 20,000 lbs per single axle and 34,000 lbs per tandem axle. Arizona issues special permits for overweight loads and has specific routing requirements for oversized vehicles. The state has several low-clearance bridges on rural routes.

Arizona-Specific Requirements

  • Arizona requires all commercial vehicles entering the state to stop at open ports of entry for credential checks.
  • The state enforces strict idle-time restrictions in certain urban areas for emissions control.
  • Arizona has reciprocal enforcement agreements with Mexican authorities for cross-border commercial vehicle operations.
  • Special permit requirements apply for loads exceeding 129,000 lbs GVW on designated routes.
