AK DOT regulations for commercial motor vehicles
AK DOT Commercial Vehicle ComplianceOfficial AK DOT websiteOverview
Alaska DOT's Measurement Standards & Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (MSCVE) division handles commercial vehicle safety. Due to the state's vast distances and extreme climate, Alaska has unique challenges for motor carrier compliance including seasonal road restrictions, winter weather requirements, and limited road network access. Many operations are on the Alaska Highway system or remote roads.
Inspection & Enforcement Program
Alaska operates a smaller inspection program than most states due to its geography. Inspections are concentrated along the Parks Highway, Glenn Highway, and Seward Highway corridors and at key ports of entry. The state participates in national inspection campaigns but has limited fixed weigh station infrastructure compared to the lower 48 states.
Weight Limits & Oversize/Overweight
Alaska allows higher gross vehicle weights than the federal 80,000 lb limit on certain state routes. Some highways permit up to 105,500 lbs with proper axle configurations. Weight limits vary significantly by road and season. Spring breakup periods (typically April-May) impose reduced weight limits on many roads to prevent damage during thaw conditions.
Alaska-Specific Requirements
- Alaska has seasonal weight restrictions during spring breakup (thaw) that can significantly reduce allowable weights on state roads.
- Studded tires are permitted from September 16 through April 30 statewide.
- The state's remote location means many carriers operate under unique exemptions for the Alaska Highway system.
- Alaska does not participate in IRP for some vehicle classes; check with AK DMV for specific registration requirements.
